Alexander Albon is Scuderia Toro Rosso’s newest driver, competing in the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship. Born in London on 23 March 1996, he has dual nationality, being both British and Thai.

Alexander Albon is only the second ever driver to race in Formula 1 sporting the flag of Thailand. In fact, his father Nigel is English and used to race in touring cars in the early Nineties and his mother is Thai. The first Thai F1 driver, Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanubandh, known as B. Bira, raced in the early Fifties.

Like all F1 drivers, Alex started karting at a very young age, winning the Super 1 Honda National Championship (Cadet and KF3 classes) in 2006 and 2009 and in 2010 he was crowned European Champion. In 2012, he joined the Red Bull Junior Programme, racing in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup.

After a difficult year, Albon left the programme, but his determination saw him fight his way back to the top: in 2016, he proved his worth, finishing second in GP3, behind winner Charles Leclerc.

For the past two seasons, he has raced in Formula 2, first with ART Grand Prix and then with DAMS, finishing third in 2018 with four wins, three pole positions and four more podium finishes. These results, combined with his perseverance saw him recalled to the Red Bull Programme and in 2019, he made his Formula 1 debut alongside team-mate Daniil Kvyat.

Alex immediately showed what he could do, with five Top Ten finishes, picking up 16 points for our team. These encouraging results led to him switching to Red Bull Racing after the summer break. He then took a fifth place as well as a string of six sixth place finishes, and was confirmed with the team for 2020.  In the year in which Formula 1 celebrated its 70th anniversary, Alex made his maiden appearance on the podium at the Tuscan Grand Prix and again in Bahrain, finishing seventh in the Drivers’ Championship.

For 2021, Alex assumes the role of reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri.
